what i believe this quote mean is that if you want a direction to go in life you have to set goal. goals are purpose so you can get what you want. a rudder give ship direction like how goals give us purpose to after those goals. for example if Kobe didn't set the goal to be one of the best to ever play the game he wouldn't have done it. he but the time and dedication to be one of the best to be better than ever one else and went to go get it.
